My name is Courtney, and I am the Marketing Executive here at Horwood House!
It's hard to believe how fast time has flown, I’ve been here since August 2023! I really love being creative here at Horwood. I particularly enjoy having the freedom to explore and expand my limits and comfort zone, big projects involving problem solving are where I feel like I shine and allow me to use all aspects of my skills to find creative solutions.
I’m very passionate about personal development in both my personal life and in my work, and taking this course really helps me with that from both sides. I am grateful to have the support of Horwood House in developing my skill set.
What course have you chosen to do?
I am currently doing my TQUK Level 2 Certificate in Principles of Team Leading!
Why did you choose this course?
I chose this course as I really wanted to understand what it is to be a good leader/ manager. This course is helping me to understand not only what it is to be a good leader for my future team but also to help me understand how businesses run.
Having come from a background where I grew up in a family business, I had a good foundation for this, but this course is taking me to the next level!
How long is the course for?
The course is about 6 months long and contains A LOT of valuable information that I wouldn’t have otherwise learnt!
How do you balance work/ life and the course?
I’ll be honest it’s not easy! Especially when I also have to manage my ADHD and Dyslexia. Even though I love learning new things, I wouldn’t say I’m that academically inclined! However, what makes this easy is that I really enjoy learning to improve myself with the knowledge that it’ll make me a better person/ leader in the long run!
We are super busy in the hotel, and heading up marketing means that there is always something to do. I manage this by dedicating time slots to focus on the course once the work with deadlines are out of the way!
What are you hoping to get from this course?
I’m really hoping to be the best leader/ manager I can be, and in the future, I want to be the person that people can feel comfortable to come to with their issues and know that I am a sounding board to work through!
Where do you see your career going and how will this course help you?
Well, the obvious next steps are to grow the marketing team here at Horwood House! For this to happen, I need to be able to lead my team and, therefore, the hotel to success! I’ve done a great job of getting the marketing to where it is now, I just need a few more pairs of hands to bring us to the next level!
What do you like about working at Horwood House?
I quite honestly love my job here at Horwood, and I’m not just saying that because this is going to be public! I’ve come out of my shell in the past year and a half, and this is down to having the freedom to be as creative as I like. There is no shortage of crazy ideas that come out of marketing, and all of them are considered. I’ve been given the space to learn new things and develop as a person and in my career.
For example, we were quoted an amount that was totally out of our budget for a trade show stand. So, I took it upon myself and decided to learn how to use InDesign in a week and designed and had our stand printed within two weeks. Doing this saved A LOT of money, but I also learned a new skill. I was able to bring in my newly learnt (for fun at home) skill of pattern designing and incorporated this into the stand design as well! I honestly don’t know many companies out there that embrace the sort of creative freedom that I have here.
What is the ethos and atmosphere like at Horwood House?
Horwood House is the perfect place to learn more and to be more! Whether you’re just starting out or established, we are gently nudged to always improve! And I only see this as a positive! Because who doesn’t want to be the best they can be? Even when times are tough, we band together and support each other!
